Paleakastro, Crete, Greece -- 2001 Season
Several examples of site finds from seasons 1990-1994
After the pottery sherds have been catalogued and conserved, then the illustrators reconstruct the artefact visually for publication and documentation. Every find is drawn -- from a 3cm long fragment of a conical cup, to fully restored stirrup jars and amphorae. I love working with pieces that have painting on them, its a delightful challenge to reconstruct the exuberant Minoan motifs.

Minoan Bird Iconography -- a few examples
This independent project grew out of researching background material for the reconstruction of a unique vessel found within the Paleakastro site, quite near the important PK Kouros shrine. The remaining fragments of the kylix, from a Knossos studio, were very few and small -- nevertheless, they contained enough motif clues to begin a study for its possible reconstruction. The illustration of some of the hundreds of bird motifs lead me on to a deeper search into the place of birds in Minoan art, society, and religion.
Link to parts I & II of a Widdershins article for a contemporary exploration of this theme. (Unfortunately, the web version does not support the accompanying illustrations at this time. I will attempt to amend that or reproduce the articles with the illustrations here in the future.)
